18ct Yellow Gold Diamond Infinity Ring

Made in 1984, this extraordinary vintage engagement ring feels almost talismanic in its design.

Two unbroken strands of gold travel around the finger, rising together to cross and encircle a stunning diamond. There is no obvious beginning and no visible end. From the side, the strands form an infinity-like figure beneath the stone. Two paths entwining, separating and finding one another again.

It is difficult not to see a deliberate love story in it.

Viewed from above, the setting takes on another form: an eye, with the diamond held at its centre. Across cultures and centuries, the eye has carried many meanings; creation, unity, protection, the meeting of two worlds. Seeing, and being truly seen. Here, whether intended by its original maker or simply discovered in the design decades later, the ancient shape gives the ring an almost amuletic quality.

And at the heart of the ring, a spectacular diamond. 

Held within those two continuous lines of gold, it feels protected, as though the entire ring has been drawn around it in one endless gesture. I can almost see the initial sketches of the ring. 

There is something particularly romantic about finding so much symbolism in a vintage engagement ring. Made in 1984 for a story we may never know, it has survived to become part of another...
